Working with Graphics Templates with Google Sheets
Updated over a week ago

When using the graphics package catalog, you can select a template that uses a Google Sheet as its data source. This will generate a graphics package linked to the Google Sheet. However, this Google Sheet is an example with public view permissions but without editing permissions. Therefore, it's necessary to create a copy of which you will be the owner and can edit with the data you want to display in your graphics.

In this article, we'll go ahead and outline the steps to create your own copy of the Google Sheet and discuss the permissions it needs to be properly linked to your Graphics Package.

Access your Demo Spreadsheet

After generating the graphic package associated with a spreadsheet, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Global Data Providers section and click on any of those labeled as "Demo".

  2. Next, go to the Inspector on the right side of the editor. Expand the spreadsheet button and click on "Open Spreadsheet".

  3. The spreadsheet will open, and you will see that it only has read permissions.

Make your own copy of the Google spreadsheet.

This is important because by making your own copy of the spreadsheet, it will be under your ownership. This will allow you to assign all the necessary permissions to edit, add, and remove all the data you want to display in your graphics.

To make a copy

  1. Go to file

  2. click on "Make a copy"

  3. Rename your copy

After creating the copy allow access to the formulas

Make the spreadsheet public

The spreadsheet must be public so that it can be properly bound to your graphics package so that we can access the data in the spreadsheet.

To make it public you need to click on the "Share" button located on the upper right corner of your Google Sheet. Change the "General Access" setting from "Restricted" to "Anyone with the link"

Get the Spreadsheet URL

After providing the general access, copy the spreadsheet URL by clicking the "Copy Link" button

Replace the Demo Spreadsheet with yours

Go back to the editor, click on the Global data provider, and go to the Inspector on the right side of the editor. Expand the spreadsheet button and click on "Change Spreadsheet".

Select the option "Use URL"

Place the URL of your Google sheet and click on "Connect"
